MCProHosting Review – Pricey Yet a Worthy Investment

Are you thinking about hosting a Minecraft server but don’t know how to get started? Well, you can either try doing it the hard way or the efficient way. The hard way would be to host the server on your own computer. You wouldn’t have to spend any money by picking this option but you would need to learn how to configure and manage everything by yourself. In addition, you would ideally also need a pretty good PC that can run 24/7 in order to ensure a smooth experience for all players. Needless to say, there are quite a few caveats to hosting a server on your own so why not take the second option and rent one instead?

Renting a server costs a bit of money but you wouldn’t have to worry about all the other stuff because your hosting provider takes care of everything for you. The main drawback here is finding a good provider but don’t worry because that’s where we come in. We recently scoured the internet for the best Minecraft providers around and found one that we think is perfect for veterans and newcomers alike. The provider in question is MCProHosting, a very popular choice for players who are looking for an easy to use service that offers many great features. We read a lot of positive user reviews about the company over the past few months so we decided to finally test the service for ourselves and see what all the fuss is about. Take a look at what we learned in our MCProHosting review down below.

Navigation and Ease of Use

Making a good first impression is essential if you want to attract new customers, a fact that MCProHosting seems to be well aware of. Upon first visiting the company’s website I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of clutter and unnecessary elements. I wouldn’t call the site minimalistic per se, but it was definitely designed with simplicity in mind. The homepage contains most of the important information you might expect, including the main features, location coverage and how the company compares to other Minecraft server hosting providers.

Renting a server is pretty straightforward. Simply visit the ‘Order’ page and pick the game you’re interested in. MCProHosting offers plans for both the Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft along with a few other games like CS: GO, Ark, and Garry’s Mod. In addition, you can also get regular dedicated web hosting at pretty reasonable prices. After selecting the game you want, you can choose your plan, server location, and pick a few other customization options before proceeding to checkout. MCProHosting doesn’t support logins with Facebook or Twitter so you’ll need to create a new account (if you don’t already have one) when you purchase a plan.

Intuitive Custom Control Panel

Once everything has been set up, you can go back to the homepage and access the control panel from there. The provider offers a custom control panel that comes with a good amount of advanced features, some of which are exclusive to MCProHosting. The control panel is fairly intuitive but if you’re not a big fan of it, you can manage your server from the mobile app instead. If you’re the type of person that likes to fiddle around with game files, you’ll be happy to know that MCProHosting also offers full FTP access via local clients or the company’s web-based FTP client.

When it comes to mods and plugins support, the company isn’t quite as user-friendly. MCProHosting allows you to install any plugin or modpack on your server but doesn’t offer 1-click installs, so you’ll need to take care of things manually. You can also upload any JAR file you want via FTP. If you’re not particularly tech-savvy, you can pay to add a server management pack to your plan. Among other things, this will give you access to mod and plugin setup services, which basically means that MCProHosting’s team will install plugins for you and will also create curated modpacks for your server on demand.

Plans and Pricing

The prices at MCProHosting are quite a bit above average, at least as far as the Java edition is concerned. The entry point here is $8 per month and there are a few other packages priced between $10 and $50 per month. The basic plan doesn’t include anything special but some of the higher tier ones come with a number of benefits, including unlimited resources and server management packs.

Meanwhile, prices for the Bedrock edition of Minecraft are a lot cheaper than I expected. A basic package will only set you back $1.50 per month while the most expensive one costs just $15 per month. Server management packs are not available for the Bedrock edition but you can spend a few bucks to enhance your package with a couple of optional add-ons.

MCProHosting Hosting Plans
MCProHosting Plans and Starting Prices

Speaking of server management packs, there are only two to choose from – Premium and Ultimate. The Premium pack costs $8 per month and includes a plugin setup service that supports up to 25 plugins and the Create-A-Modpack service that supports up to 25 mods. The Ultimate pack costs $10 per month and is fairly similar but can support up to 50 mods and also unlocks the ability to invite an unlimited number of players to your server. These packages need to be purchased separately if you go with one of the first three hosting plans. If you buy one of the other ones, either the Premium or Ultimate packs will be included for free.

Minecraft Bedrock Edition

The Bedrock edition plans are a lot more straightforward as you don’t have to worry about having to spend money on too many optional add-ons or services. In fact, the only things you can buy are a dedicated IP for $3 per month (which is also available with Java edition plans) and backup upgrades for $2/mo per every additional GB of storage.

MCProHosting supports monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and yearly billing cycles. Customers can benefit from discounts of up to 15% off by subscribing for several months in advance. The company also offers a 7-day money-back guarantee so there’s little risk in checking out the service.

Specs and Slots

MCProHosting uses Linux-based servers with dual Intel E5-2600 series CPUs and enterprise-grade SSD storage. The hardware isn’t necessarily the best we’ve ever seen but it’s certainly good enough to get the job done. The fact that the company uses a 1 GB/s network connection helps smoothen things out even more. You don’t really have to worry about the storage because you get an unlimited amount of it with both the Java and Bedrock editions, regardless of which plan you pick.

Available RAMNumber of SlotsPrice
Steve Plan1GB25 Slots$7.99
Villager Plan2GB35 Slots$9.99
Witch Plan4GB70 Slots$19.99
Enderman Plan6GB100 Slots$29.99
Wither Plan8GBUnlimited Slots$39.99
Herobrine PlanUnlimitedUnlimited Slots$49.99

If you go with the basic Java edition package, you’ll have 1 GB of RAM and 25 slots to work with, which is not bad for the price. As you work your way up to the higher tiers, you can expect to get a lot more slots and memory. Starting with the $40 tier, plans come with unlimited slots and once you reach the final tier ($50) you also get unlimited RAM. In other words, the last plan has unlimited everything. If you’re willing to shell out 2 bucks a month you can get unlimited slots with any of the other plans as well.

The amount of resources you get with the Bedrock plans is a lot more limited when compared to the Java ones, which isn’t too surprising given the huge price difference. With the basic package, you only get 256 MB of RAM and support for up to 10 players. That’s not a whole lot but given that it only costs $1.5 per month, it’s definitely not a bad deal for those who want to rent their first Minecraft server. At most, you can get up to 3 GB of RAM and support for unlimited players with the most expensive plan. That’s definitely a good offer and very easy to recommend.

Additional Features and Tools

MCProHosting offers a wide variety of interesting features, some of which are quite easy to miss because they’re pretty situational. For example, the company offers military discounts so if you’re a member of the army you can rent a Minecraft server for cheaper than usual. Meanwhile, if you’re a Minecraft content creator or streamer you can take advantage of MCProHosting’s referral program to make a bit of money on the side. Another nice feature is instant cancellation, which lets you cancel the service at any time without having to get in touch with a support agent first.

In terms of traditional features, there are no big surprises in this department as MCProHosting does a good job of covering all its bases. All users benefit from instant setup, DDoS protection, a free MySQL database, free subdomain, and free automatic off-site backups. The company keeps all backups found on its servers for up to 1 year. Once that period expires, the backups will be deleted. While a dedicated IP will cost you $3 per month, you can get an IP with a port for free by signing up for any of the Java edition packages.

MCProHosting Features
Comparing MCProHosting Features

All that aside, I found the server management packs to be one of the most interesting features offered by MCProHosting. Even though they are a bit expensive, adding one of these packs to your hosting plan would make life a lot easier for you, especially if you’re a newcomer. Veterans shouldn’t have any problems installing modpacks and plugins by themselves but if you’re new to this, you’ll need a bit of help until you wrap your head around how this works. I wouldn’t necessarily call server management packs a must-buy but they’re definitely a nice addition to the company’s already impressive list of features and tools.

Performance and Reliability

When it comes to performance, MCProHosting doesn't get on the same level as some of the top competitors, like Shockbyte or Scalacube. You can expect servers to run smoothly most of the time but you might experience some lag on occasion. Then again, the same can be said about most game hosting companies so I don’t feel like the minor technical issues are a deal-breaker. Many of the problems are related to the fact that the company doesn’t offer 1-click installs for modpacks so you’ll need to take care of that yourself unless you buy a server management pack of course. If you don’t know your way around installing mods and plugins or if you try to install too many at once, you’ll probably run into some issues.

In addition to adding more support for mod and plugin installs, it wouldn’t hurt if MCProHosting would also upgrade its hardware a bit. The company uses Intel’s E5-2600 series of processors, which are by now means bad, however, in recent times many of its competitors have switched to the superior AMD Ryzen CPUs so it feels like MCProHosting is falling a bit behind here. The servers are pretty solid even with the current hardware but there’s certainly room for improvement.

Excellent Uptime

One thing you won’t have to worry about if you sign up with MCProHosting is the uptime. The company’s servers are known for being highly reliable, with crashes or disconnects being very rare. MCProHosting offers a 99.99% uptime guarantee, and unlike other companies, has an SLA (service level agreement) that essentially forces it to stick to that promise to the best of its abilities. If the company isn’t able to fulfill its uptime guarantee, affected users can request client service credits as compensation.

These credits entitle users anywhere between 7 and 28 days of free service depending on the amount of downtime they experienced. If the server uptime falls below 95% during the course of a single month, you’ll essentially receive almost an entirely free month of hosting as compensation. Naturally, nobody wants to experience downtime, but in case it does happen, it’s nice to know that you’ll receive some sort of compensation in return.

Location Coverage

The location coverage is one of the areas where MCProHosting truly shines. While most Minecraft hosting providers give you 4 or maybe 5 locations to choose from, here you get to pick between a total of 19. The proximity of your server has a direct impact on the amount of latency you will experience. That’s why you always want to go with the absolute closest server whenever possible.

MCProHosting Location Coverage
Servers Location Coverage

The only exception to this rule is if you want to host a server for players located in an entirely different region. In that case, it might be better to rent a server found in the same region as your players to ensure a smooth experience for them, even though that might hurt your own.

Out of the 19 available locations 11 of them are found in the US, spread pretty evenly between the east and the west coast. Another 4 server hubs can be found across Europe in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK. The remaining 4 datacenters can be found in Brazil, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia. Although the distribution isn’t exactly even around the world, MCProHosting’s location coverage remains one of the best out there.

Customer Support

Finding a Minecraft hosting provider with a good customer support team is, unfortunately, pretty rare. Most companies that host game servers are pretty small and don’t employ a lot of staff. As a result, you’ll often have to wait a long time to get a reply from the support team. For the most part, that won’t be the case at MCProHosting. The company’s support agents are generally very fast and very friendly when interacting with clients in need of assistance. Not just that but they also know their stuff so you can expect any problem you may have to be resolved quickly.

MCProHosting Knowledgebase

Support agents can be contacted 24/7 via the ticket system and you can also reach out to them via live chat in case of an urgent problem. The live chat isn’t available 24/7 but you can get in touch with a support agent anytime between 9 AM to 1 AM EST from Monday through Sunday. Users can also gain access to premium support by purchasing one of the server management packs or one of the high-tier hosting plans. Users that have access to premium support can contact agents to help them with everything from uploading worlds to transferring files via FTP. As long as the request is reasonable, the agents will try their best to help with whatever you need.

If you run into a problem that seems relatively easy to fix, you can try looking for a solution in the knowledge base instead of contacting support. The knowledgebase contains around 200 articles and guides, many of which are very useful. If you’re not that much into reading, you can also find a lot of the articles in video format on MCProHosting’s YouTube channel.

F.A.Q.

What Happens if I Forget to Pay for My Server?

There’s no need to worry right away if you forget to pay for your hosting because MCProHosting grants users a 5-day grace period before switching off their service. The service will remain suspended for an additional 9 days after that point if the user fails to make the payment. Once those 9 days have elapsed, all files will automatically be deleted. However, MCProHosting keeps backups of all servers for up to a year so if you ever decide to reactive your subscription during that period, you should be able to recover your files.

Can I Upgrade or Downgrade My Hosting Plan?

Upgrading or downgrading a package is indeed possible and can be done at any time. Moreover, the process can be initiated manually by the user from the Billing Area so there’s no need to contact customer support.

Can I Upload Custom Maps to My Server?

Users can upload any number of maps they wish via WebFTP or a local FTP client like FileZilla. If you need help with the process, make sure to check out the knowledgebase for a step-by-step guide on how to do it using both types of FTP clients.

Can I Change The Location of My Server?

Changing the location of your server is possible but you won’t be able to do it manually. Instead, you’ll need to submit a ticket to customer support and request a transfer. Make sure you really want the transfer before submitting the ticket because changing the server location will also change your IP address.

What’s MCProHosting’s Refund Policy?

MCProHosting offers a 7-day money-back guarantee. However, services purchased using a promotional code are not eligible for refunds while dedicated servers are subject to a 30% restocking fee, so no full refunds in that case.

Final Thoughts

MCProHosting isn’t without its flaws but in this case, the pros outweigh the cons by a pretty significant margin. The main drawback here for most people would have to be the price. While the Bedrock edition plans are quite cheap, the Java edition ones can get pretty expensive, particularly if you also want to add a server management pack. Aside from that, you may occasionally encounter a bit of lag or some technical issues but these occurrences tend to be few and far between.

As far as the positives are concerned, there are quite a few worth mentioning. First off, MCProHosting justifies its high Java prices by including many useful features and a good amount of resources with every package. You can also get great premium support and unlimited everything if you’re willing to invest enough into the service. Another big advantage is the location coverage, which is truly one of the best on the market right now.
