A Few Reasons Why You May Want to Look Into SiteGround Alternatives

As mentioned at the start of this article, we really enjoy working with SiteGround and vouch for the quality of its services. But just like any other company, SiteGround has certain drawbacks that can make it difficult to recommend for certain situations. In this section we’re going to talk about some of those drawbacks, just so you have a better understanding of why we decided to make a list of SiteGround alternatives in the first place.

Above Average Pricing

Let’s get this one out of the way first because it is our biggest point of contention. At $6.99 per month, SiteGround’s entry price for basic shared hosting is too high for the average user. Beginners, in particular, will be put off by this price tag because it’s unwise to invest too much into a service when you’re just learning the ropes.

Prices for cloud hosting are even more extreme, with the cheapest package going for no less than $80 per month. To the company’s credit, the cloud packages do come with a good amount of resources but that doesn’t change the fact that only companies and agencies are able to afford them.

SiteGround does give users the possibility of creating a custom cloud instance, but there’s a minimum limit on the resources you are able to add. And as it happens, you can’t create an instance that’s cheaper than $80 per month, though you can create much more expensive ones if you want.

Limited Storage

While cloud hosting gives you plenty of resources to work with, shared hosting doesn’t give you nearly enough of them. A basic plan only comes with 10GB of storage while the most expensive package, priced at $14.99 per month, comes with 40GB.

Most of the SiteGround alternatives we covered in this article give you at least 50GB right off the bat and some of them don’t limit the storage at all regardless of which plan you’re going for. SiteGround works exclusively with solid-state drives, which would have explained the limited storage several years ago. These days, however, most hosting companies also offer SSD storage and are far less stingy with it.

While SiteGround doesn’t say how much RAM and CPU power you can use if you’re on shared hosting, it’s likely not a whole lot. The company lists the average number of monthly visitors your site would be able to support and they’re not very impressive.

Bad Scalability

If you’re website is growing at a fast pace you’ll run into issues sooner than you might expect because of the lack of resources mentioned earlier. However, that’s the least of your problems. Usually when a website begins outgrowing its hosting plan, it’s time to start looking into potential upgrade options. Unfortunately, SiteGround doesn’t give you a lot of options to work with.

Once you reach the third tier of shared hosting, you’ve got to be prepared to make a massive investment and switch to cloud hosting if you want to upgrade because there’s nothing in between the two. SiteGround doesn’t support VPS hosting and you probably don’t want to go with enterprise hosting because that would cost you even more than cloud hosting.

Your only other options are reseller hosting, WordPress hosting and WooCommerce hosting. Reseller is a specialized type of hosting that you probably don’t need while the other types are essentially just the shared hosting plans with a few extra features, and their prices are identical.

No Free Domain

SiteGround is one of the few major hosting companies that doesn’t include a free domain name with its hosting plans. Granted, domains tend to be free only for the first year when bundled with hosting plans but that’s still better than nothing.

The lack of a free domain name is particularly bothersome given SiteGround’s already high prices. As a result, you’ll have to spend $15.95 in order to register a domain name when you sign up with SiteGround if you don’t already have one. That’s in addition to paying for the hosting itself of course.

Final Thoughts

Love it or hate it, SiteGround is one of the biggest hosting providers around and that’s not going to change anytime soon. The provider’s services are great for businesses and agencies but they don’t bring enough to table for most average users.
