Unturned is a game that somehow manages to feel both simple and complex at the same time. The core gameplay mechanics are very straightforward and easy to learn even if you don’t have any previous experience with survival sandbox games. However, there’s a lot more content here than you might expect and the game is overall pretty challenging past a certain point. This duality is one of the main reasons why I found Unturned to be such a compelling game.

Like most titles in this genre, Unturned is a lot more fun when played with friends. Teaming up with other people is also very practical because the game world is overrun by zombies and it helps to have someone to watch your back. Zombies aside, you’ll also need to be careful when running into other players. Not everyone is out to get you, of course, but there are definitely plenty of players who would love to get their hands on your loot.

So what do you do if you want to play Unturned with your friends without having to get into fights with other players? After all, not everybody is into PvP. Well, the only reliable way to do that is by creating your own private server. That way, you have full control over who gets to run around your map and you can kick the people who are causing trouble.

Unfortunately, creating your own server in Unturned is a bit more difficult than it may seem. Hosting a server also requires a time investment on your part as you’ll be the one responsible for making sure that everything runs smoothly. Alternatively, you could avoid the busy work while still taking advantage of the benefits that come with having your own server by simply renting one instead.

Renting an Unturned Server vs. Hosting Your Own

Upon entering Unturned for the first time you’ll notice that the game doesn’t give you the option of creating a dedicated server. You can either play single player or jump onto an existing server if you want to play with others. At first, I thought that it simply wasn’t possible to create a server but that’s actually not the case. After doing a bit of research I learned that you can, in fact, do it but you’ll need to set things up from outside the game.

Setting up a new server isn’t terribly complicated but you’ll definitely need to follow a tutorial if you want to pull it off because there are no in-game instructions that guide you through the process. Instead, you’ll need to go to the installation folder and make certain changes to one of the files. Frankly, the whole thing can be a bit of a hassle for people who aren’t comfortable with modifying game files.

You also need to keep in mind that hosting your own server requires you to allocate a good amount of resources to it, especially if more than 10 people are playing at a time. In addition, your computer would have to run constantly because everybody gets kicked out the moment you shut it off. You’ll also need a very good and reliable internet connection in order to ensure a smooth experience for everybody.

By comparison, renting an Unturned server doesn’t come with any of those disadvantages because the hosting provider takes care of everything for you. The only real downside is that renting a server costs a bit of money. The good news is that Unturned servers are pretty cheap and you can easily rent one for just $5-10 a month.

A Few Things to Note About Hosting Providers

There are dozens of providers out there that offer Unturned servers at bargain prices. Generally speaking, the price of a server is dictated by the number of slots it can support. The word slots is used to indicate how many people can play on the server. For example, a 10-slot server can support a maximum of 10 players at any one time.

Providers have a minimum and a maximum number of slots for their servers, which can vary quite a bit from one company to the next. The minimum usually sits at around 8-10 while the maximum can reach as high as 100 or even more. Unturned is best enjoyed with small-to-medium-sized groups of people so you probably won’t need 100 slots unless you’re a content creator and want to build a sizeable community around your server.

Price aside, you’ll also need to think about the features you’re going to need. Do you want to play with mods? Do you want your files to be backed up automatically or manually? Are you looking for something a bit more specific like DDoS protection, money-back guarantee or a custom control panel? Different providers offer different features so it’s important to know what you’re looking for before you decide to sign up with a certain company.

Another thing to keep in mind is the location coverage. Ideally, you’ll need to make sure that the server you’re renting is located as close to you as possible in order to avoid high latency. Most providers have pretty good coverage across Europe and the US but there are a lot fewer that also have servers in regions like Asia, Australia, or South America. It’s harder to find a nearby data center if you live in one of those regions, however, it’s not impossible.

Top 5 Unturned Server Hosting Providers in 2022

I did a good amount of research to try and find out which providers are worth signing up for within 2022 and came up with a top 5 list that I think is pretty solid. I wanted to include something for everybody so you’ll notice that some providers have great prices while others offer more features or better location coverage.

Although this is a ranked list, any of the five companies I covered below can do a fantastic job at hosting your Unturned server. It’s up to you to decide which provider would be the perfect fit for you based on your specific needs. With that in mind, let’s jump straight into the list and take a closer look at the top 5 Unturned hosting providers in 2022.

1. GTX Gaming

GTX is hands down one of the best providers around for dozens of different games, including Unturned. The company includes a wide variety of features with each hosting package and its prices are some of the lowest on the market right now.

Features:

GTX Gaming has very good mod support, complete with auto-updater, Steam Workshop integration, and 1-click installs. Game updates and server backups occur automatically and can also be manually scheduled by users. You can access your server via FTP, a phpMyAdmin control panel, a web console or a mobile app that lets you manage things even when you’re away from your PC. Free DDoS and free debranding are both included along with a few more advanced features like game switching, automatic server cloning, free MySQL database, and more. The location coverage is also very impressive, with 17 locations around the world to choose from.

Pricing:

Unturned servers at GTX start at $8 per month for 20 slots and can reach up to $19.20 for 48 slots. Unfortunately, you can’t get servers with less than 20 slots but you’re still looking at some very good prices regardless. For a little bit extra you can customize your server by adding a faster SSD, increasing the CPU clock speed or boosting the CPU priority. The customization options are pretty expensive compared to other hosts and GTX also charges a couple of bucks for priority ticket support. Similarly, server migration is only available as a paid service and it’s not exactly cheap. GTX accepts monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or yearly payments but there are no discounts for paying in advance.

Support:

GTX offers 24/7 customer support via tickets and email. There is no live chat option but the company does have a dedicated Discord channel that performs a similar function. GTX also has two phone numbers (London and Texas offices) you can reach them at.

Pros:

  • Great prices
  • Great mod support
  • Impressive location coverage
  • Mobile control panel
  • Game switching

Cons:

  • Paid server migration
  • Expensive server customization
  • High minimum slots

2. ServerBlend

ServerBlend hasn’t been around for as long as other companies on this list but don’t let its relatively young age fool you. This provider has great prices for Unturned servers and includes some nice features that you don’t come across every day.

Features:

ServerBlend offers free DDoS protection and debranding along with full FTP access and a TCAdmin control panel. If you’re looking for an alternative way of controlling your server, you can use the integrated Discord bot. The company also includes location switching, a free host transfer service, free daily server backups, and automatic game updates. Another big selling point of ServerBlend is that it offers 14 days money-back guarantee. Mods are supported but you don’t get any advanced features like 1-click installs or a mod manager GUI. Location coverage is pretty poor, with data center only being available in the US and the Netherlands.

Pricing:

ServerBlend has some pretty good prices for Unturned servers. You can expect to pay anywhere between $4.95 per month for a 10-slot server to $24.75 per month for a 50-slot server. If you have a bit more money to spend, you can add a few additional options to your package, such as higher CPU priority for $6.41 per month, a 10-slot TeamSpeak server for $1.67 per month, hourly automatic off-site backups for $5 per month or a sub-domain for just $0.75 per month. It rarely gets any cheaper than this and the only downside I can think of is that ServerBlend only accepts monthly payments.

Support:

ServerBlend offers 24/7 customer support via tickets and email. Live chat is also an option but agents are not available at all times. The company has a pretty good knowledge base on its website alongside a helpdesk, FAQ section, and a few useful tutorials.

Pros:

  • Great prices
  • 14-day money-back guarantee
  • Free host transfer service
  • Discord bot integration

Cons:

  • Poor location coverage
  • Only accepts monthly payments

3. Streamline Servers

Streamline is another well-known provider that has been in the business for over a decade now. The company has great location coverage and offers many of the important features you would expect, however, its prices are just a bit above average.

Features:

You can expect good mod support from Streamline along with advanced features like 1-click installs and a mod manager GUI. The company uses TCAdmin control panels but users also get full FTP access to their servers. DDoS protection and debranding are both included for free and Streamline also offers free server migration services. Location switching is not available and you’ll need to take care of game updates manually. Server backups are not performed automatically by default, however, Streamline does offer an optional paid service that unlocks daily automatic backups for $3.75 a month. Unturned servers are available in 22 locations around the globe so you shouldn’t have trouble finding one near you.

Pricing:

Prices at Streamline start at $6 per month for 8-slot servers and can reach up to $24 per month for 32-slot servers. For a little bit extra, you can customize your server by adding more RAM, raising the CPU priority or boosting the CPU clock speed. New customers can benefit from a free 30-day trial for Tebex, a payment service designed specifically to help gamers monetize their private servers. Streamline accepts monthly, quarterly, semi-annually and yearly payments. Paying for several months in advance will net you some really nice discounts that can reach up to 20% off for those who choose to go for a yearly subscription plan.

Support:

Streamline Servers offers 24/7 customer support via tickets and intermittent support via live chat. If there are no agents available to chat, make sure to hit up the knowledge base on the official website because you can find a lot of helpful articles and tutorials there.

Pros:

  • Free game server migration
  • Great location coverage
  • Flexible payment system + discounts
  • Customizable servers

Cons:

  • Paid automatic backups
  • No automatic updates

4. Host Havoc

Host Havoc is a reliable hosting provider that was established more than 5 years ago with the goal of providing quality services to its customers. This isn’t the cheapest option out there but its services are definitely well worth the asking price.

Features:

Host Havoc has good mod support for Unturned servers, complete with 1-click installs. Servers can be configured via a TCAdmin control panel and you also have full FTP access to boot. Game updates are done automatically but you’ll need to manually take care of server backups and there is no location switching. However, Host Havoc does include free DDoS protection, free debranding, and even a free MySQL database. The location coverage is pretty good, with nine data centers spread across North America, Europe, and Australia.

Pricing:

Prices at Host Havoc start at $12.60 per month for 18-slot servers and can reach up to $33.60 per month for 48-slot servers. The minimum number of slots you can go for is quite high but the price per slot isn’t too bad all things considered. High CPU priority is available for only $4 per month and you can also add an extra 7 GB of RAM to your server for $12.50 per month. Host Havoc offers four billing cycles to choose from – monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually. Paying for several months in advance will net you some nice discounts that can reach up to 12% off for yearly subscriptions.

Support:

Host Havoc offers 24/7 customer support via email, tickets, and live chat. The support portal is very nicely put together and there is also a knowledge base on the official website where you can find useful articles, tutorials, and an FAQ section.

Pros:

  • Free MySQL database
  • Flexible payment system + discounts
  • Great support

Cons:

  • No automatic server backups
  • High minimum slots

5. Ark Game Server Hosting

In spite of what its name may imply, AGS isn’t actually an exclusive provider of Ark Survival Evolved servers. That was likely the plan when the company was first established back in 2015 but nowadays AGS supports dozens of titles, including Unturned.

Features:

AGS offers free debranding, free DDoS Protection, full FTP access, and a TCAdmin control panel. Automatic game updates, automatic server backups, and location switching are all included along with a free MySQL database. Mod support is pretty good and comes with advanced features like one-click installs, mod manager GUI, and Steam Workshop integration. AGS also has a 14-day money-back guarantee policy and offers a server migration service for a one-time fee of $13.90. Location coverage is pretty good, with 12 data centers to choose from across four continents.

Pricing:

Renting an Unturned server from AGS will set you back $8.34 for 12-slot servers but the price can reach as high as $44.48 for 64-slot servers. Not the cheapest option around but certainly not the most expensive one either. AGS works with monthly, quarterly, and semi-annually billing cycles. You can benefit from 5% off by signing up for a quarterly plan or 10% off if you go for the semi-annual subscription.

Support:

AGS offers 24/7 customer support but only via its ticket system. However, the company has a pretty good knowledge base on its official website with dozens of helpful articles about Unturned.

Pros:

  • Good location coverage
  • 14-day money-back guarantee
  • Free MySQL database
  • Flexible payment system + discounts

Cons:

  • Paid server migration
  • Few support channels

Final Thoughts

As you can see, there’s no need to break the bank if you’re planning to rent an Unturned server. Sure, you don’t have to pay anything if you decide to host your own server but the whole process is a bit of a hassle and managing everything yourself is not as fun as it may seem at first. Besides, you have full control over the server and can use any console commands you want even if you rent it so don’t worry about missing out on anything. In fact, there are a lot more benefits than disadvantages when you rent.

As for which provider you should choose, that’s entirely up to you. I feel like GTX Gaming offered the best value for my money but that might not be the case for everybody. If you’re looking for the cheapest possible option that would have to be ServerBlend right now where you’ll only end up paying around $0.50 per slot, which is a very good deal.

Meanwhile, Host Havoc and Streamline Servers both offer better location coverage and a host of nice features but they are a bit more expensive. AGS is a bit of a wild card given that its main focus is Ark Survival Evolved but that doesn’t mean it neglects its other games either, so it’s still worth taking into consideration. Choosing a good provider is an important decision so I hope this article made things a bit easier for you.
